Colorburst Plant Farm, Inc. was established in 2003, by my wife and me (Jodi and Matt Vehr), as a wholesale nursery growing high quality herbaceous perennial plants and select woody plants. I grew up in Cincinnati, OH and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1982. Following high school I was attracted to Middle Tennessee State University and graduated in 1986 with a major in Plant and Soil Science and a minor in Biology. My wife, Jodi, graduated from MTSU in 1987. After graduating I moved back home to Cincinnati, and Jodi moved there as well after she graduated.
I began work as an assistant garden center manager from 1986 to 1988. In fall of 1988 I was hired by the Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum as the new Manager of Horticulture. This is where I honed my love for ornamental horticulture , propagation all things botanical. Spring Grove sat on 733 acres of land over 400 of which was intensively maintained as a public garden and privately maintained as one of the premier cemeteries in the United States.
In 1999 my wife's parents told us that if we wanted to use some of their 48 acres of land as a nursery that we were welcome to do so. So in 2003, after much thought and planning, Jodi and I moved to Murfreesboro with our three children Katie, Jake and Rachael.
Fast forward 16 years and I am still running the nursery. However, I am now running it with my son Jake. Jake graduated from MTSU in 2015 with a major in Agricultural Business. The business degree is a real Godsend for me since I am a plant geek who does not have a keen mind for business. Jake however has a fresh mind for the business aspect of the nursery. He also has some inspiring ideas for the nursery and enthusiam to bring some of the ideas to fruition.
The land where the nursery now sits was owned by my wife's grandparents and served as a cattle and chicken farm from the mid 1950s to the early 1990s. When Jodi's grandparents passsed her parents assumed the property in the 1997. In 2012 Jodi and I inherited this beautiful piece of Middle Tennessee land.
Over the past sixteen years we have grown hundreds of herbaceous perennial and woody plant cultivars. Each year we evaluate all of the plants we grow, determining those plants that we feel are worthy of greater production and those which should be eliminated from our product line. Our goal is to grow the cultivars that will perform optimally under the stressful Middle Tennessee seasonal extremes.
We are located in the exact center of the state of Tennessee. This convenient locale means that we can easily get plants to your property or you can pick them up by making a short drive to Murfreesboro.
If you operate a garden center or are a landscape contractor, landscape designer, builder, municipality or in a field requiring the use of high quality plant material contact us to become another happy Colorburst Plant Farm customer.
We are also happy to grow specific plants for you if you know which plants and how many you will need, and when you will need them. This can be done under a contractual arrangement.
